Common Questions About Youth Assessments

Q: Do players have to be registered to be assessed?
A: Yes. To attend assessments all players must be registered with Bays for the upcoming season. Spring assessments are essential in Youth League to prepare for the fall season; however, it is very difficult to form balanced teams if players don’t register and attend assessments. Q: Who does the assessing?
A: Bays United technical team will be assessing all players. Current and prospective coaches do not participate in the assessment process.

Q:  What time should I come? How long will it last?
A:  Please try to show up 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled assessment start time. This allows for time to check-in with the “Clipboard Captain” and warm up. Assessments can run for 1-1.5 hours. Be prepared to attend the full session.

Q:  Do players HAVE TO be assessed to be on a team?
A:  No. Players wishing to play at the Silver level are not required to attend assessments. If a player registers, but does not attend Gold or VIPL assessments, that player will be assigned to a Silver team for their age group.

Q:  What should I wear for assessments?
A:  Players should come ready to play soccer in cleats, shin pads and sports wear. Assessments are held “rain or shine” so please dress in appropriate layers for the weather.

Q: I have (my child has) an illness/conflict and cannot attend the assessment for my age group. What should I do?
A: Please email AssessmentCoordinator@baysunited.ca to let us know in advance. While there are no “make-up” sessions, it is sometimes possible to have the player attend the session for an alternate age group. Registered players who miss assessments will have last year’s assessment score used for team placement purposes.

Q:  What are the “invitation only” sessions? Should my child attend?
A: The purpose behind ‘invite only’ sessions is to allow assessors more time to review specific players in order to make the best possible decisions around team selection. If your child DOES NOT receive an invitation, please do not bring your player to this session.

Q: When can I speak with the assessors to see how my child is performing?
A: The Bays United Technical Team and assessors are very busy during assessments and will not be speaking with parents about any specific players, player placements or assessment results. If you have questions about assessments, please contact our Assessment Coordinator.

Q: My child is talented and should play-up a year. Can they attend an assessment for another age group?

A: Our club believes that players should play within their own age group, with few exceptions. Please do not bring your player to an assessment outside of their age group. Should your child’s coach and technical staff deem them ‘exceptional,’ you will be approached to discuss playing-up. Click here for more information on our playing-up policy.

Q: What if I only want to play goalkeeper? 
A: Goalkeepers are expected to attend regular team assessments, but there may be an additional goalkeeper assessment should the need arise.

Q: How can I help?
A: We are always looking for volunteers to be “clipboard captains” at assessments. Please sign-up here and our assessment coordinator will be in touch.

Q: When will finalized teams be announced?
A: Once assessments are over and teams are determined, team lists will be added to the Team Formation page and will be communicated to players and families via email. It takes a lot of time and coordination to determine all youth teams. We appreciate your patience and will endeavour to let members know as soon as possible.
